A Trip to the Big City
Nagoya Castle
First on your list of places to visit in Nagoya should be Nagoya Castle. While not wholly original like Inuyama Castle, it is a symbol of the city, has a fantastic collection of art and historical pieces, and its keep provides a wonderful view of the city.
Nagoya Castle's Honmaru Palace's reconstruction was recently completed, giving visitors the chance to see what the palace would've looked like originally. The palace was painstakingly recreated using the construction methods of the period. Inside the palace, you'll find gold leaf-covered wall panels and delicately painted art. The Lord Yoshinao's private quarters can be seen as well, which feature gorgeous nature scenes created for the shogun's wife, Princess Haru. The area around the castle is a great place to pick up souvenirs or something to eat.
Nagoya is one of the largest cities in Japan, offering lots of places to shop, numerous tourist spots to check out, and great places to take some more memorable photos of your trip to Japan. Check out the links below for recommended places to visit and activities to try.
A Different Kind of Japanese Cuisine
Before coming to Japan, foreigners might think of light dishes like miso soup, sushi, and soba noodles. Nagoya is quite famous however for having rather heavy food. While you're in Nagoya, you should check out some of the richer dishes Japan has to offer.
Of all the foods Nagoya is most famous for, tebasaki [chicken wings] is #1. There are a number of places in Nagoya that specialize in tebasaki. While not atomic orange like those found in American restaurants, Nagoya wings can definitely be spicy. The most famous are Yamachan and Furaibo.
If you're not a wings person, you might enjoy Nagoya's other famous dish, miso katsu. It's essentially a breaded and fried pork cutlet that is smothered in a rich miso sauce. It's hearty fare that most Western visitors will love. If you're not a fan of miso, most restaurants allow patrons to switch from miso-based sauce to a soy sauce style of sauce. The most famous miso katsu restaurant is Yabaton, but you can find miso katsu all over Nagoya.
