About the Historic Course
The Historic Route lets you discover Japan’s history and experience the spirit of its people.
Numerous castles and their castle towns retain parts of their former samurai culture.
The scenery you’ll find in the old post towns and historic villages is remarkable.
The world heritage site Shirakawa-go, with its stunning gassho-zukuri [thatch-roofed] architecture, is still inhabited to this day.
You’ll also find the sacred mountain trails of Kumano Kodo, another world heritage site, and Ise-Jingu Shrine,
a pilgrimage destination that people of the early modern period considered to be a place they had to visit at least once during their life time.
The people of this region have always cherished their connection with the sea,
engaging in pearl cultivation and fostering a culture of female pearl divers.
Come and experience the history, spirit, and warmth that you’ll only find in rural Japan.
