Shiroyone Senmaida Rice Terraces

Carved into the steep slopes of the northernmost coastal hillside of the Noto Peninsula, the Shiroyone Senmaida Terraced Rice Paddies are recognized as one of Japan’s 100 best terraced rice fields and are designated a Site of National Scenic Beauty. These Senmaida rice paddies are also a United Nations listed Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System. The 1,004 remaining traditional terraced paddies are too small, narrow or irregular in shape to allow machinery, and so cultivation is still done by hand. Views of the quaint terraces change with each season.
