Udatsu Craft Center

Udatsu Craft Center

For over 1,500 years Fukui Prefecture has produced traditional handcrafted Echizen washi paper, recognized as being of the highest quality and production standards across Japan. Echizen washi is known for its beauty and durability, and was used in the feudal Edo period for official documents issued by the emperors and shoguns. Visitors can observe traditional craftsmen making washi using traditional tools in a relocated and restored mid Edo period (1700’s) paper-making house. The museum is Japan’s only facility where visitors can see the entire washi making procedure using traditional tools, from raw material processing to papermaking production and sun-drying methods.
