The Historic Village Gokayama
Gokayama was registered as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 and selected as the 3-star tourist spot in Michelin guide book. The Gassho-style means a steep slope, thatched and gable roofed house built in snowy regions with a spacious attic used for sericulture. Gokayama consists of Ainokura and Suganuma districts where old Gassho-style houses, which were built in the first half of19th to the early 20th century, are preserved as designated historic sites. The Gokayama Folklore Museum exhibits domestic utensils in the almost original Gassho-style house. The accommodation is also available at the Gassho-style private guest houses.
