Kumano Kodo ‘Ancient Pilgrimage Trails of Kumano

Kodo, literally, the ancient road, means the roads used in ancient times in Japan, and still keeps the vestige of the old road. Kumano Kodo was used for pilgrimage to such sacred sites as three Kumano Sacred Mountains. ‘The Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage routes in Kii Mountain Range were registered collectively as a World Heritage Site. Kumano Kodo passing through Mie Prefecture is ‘Ise-ji’ route connecting Ise and Kumano-Hayatama Shinto Shrine. Currently, there are 18 model courses including Tsuzurato-toge mountain pass course overlooking the Seaof Kumano, Magose-toge mountain pass course walking along the stone path surrounded by cypress forest, Hamakaido road course walking along beautiful Shichiri-mihama beach, and others. You can enjoy walking, appreciating the unspoiled nature and the fascinating history.
