Jokoji Temple’s Autumn Leaves

One of Aichi Prefecture’s premier autumn leaf viewing sites is the famed Rinzai sect Zen temple, the Joko-ji. Founded in 1336, the Joko-ji contains the mausoleum of the first Lord of Owari (western Aichi Prefecture) and Nagoya Castle, Tokugawa Yoshinao, ninth son of the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. Both the Joko-ji’s ancient Muiden main temple hall and the mausoleum are designated National Cultural Properties. The Joko-ji Temple is said to play the role of the Owari region’s protective Kimon, or Demon Gate, preventing ill fortune from entering the area. By worshipping here any misfortune will immediately disappear and you will be blessed with abundant luck. Although the cherry blossom of spring is a wonderful sight, it is the contrast of the historical structures and the deep red, crimson and orange autumn leaves that will leave a lasting impression.
