Higashi Chaya District

One of Kanazawa’s most famous cultural areas is the Higashi Chaya District, featuring the traditional teahouse, Shima, a Nationally designated Important Cultural Property, and where many samurai period buildings remain. The old townscape with its beautiful latticework fronted homes and stone paved roads has been selected as an Important Traditional Building Preservation District. Enjoy Kanazawa’s unique cuisine and shopping where the streets are lined with traditional elegant kappo restaurants, and stylish machiya cafes, side by side with select stores selling traditional crafts. Rent kimonos and take photos along the traditional streets as a background in this photogenic spot where you can feel the atmosphere of Old Japan.
