Eiheiji

Eihei-ji Temple was founded by the Zen Master Dogen in 1244. For over 770 years it has been regarded as the symbolic center for Zen training and is still considered the most rigorous of all Zen sect schools. Inside the temple, seven buildings essential for ascetic training practices are connected by corridors. Here visitors can observe the monks engaging in rigorous daily ascetic training. The buildings appear to be arranged in the shape of person in meditation, with the Houdou Hall as the head and the Butsuden Hall as the heart. At Hakujukan near Eihei-ji Temple, visitors can experience zazen with temple lodging and authentic Buddhist vegetarian cuisine on offer.
