Backstage Tour
The late 1880s and early 1890s were the heyday of rural amateur theater, especially in the area surrounded by the Kiso River, the Hida River, and the Nanboku-kaido Road, where over 60 theater-style playhouses like the Meijiza were built. Many of them have been torn down over the years, but Meijiza still stands today, an invaluable existence preserving the most advanced form of these playhouses.
At the Meijiza, you can take a guided tour of places not usually open to the public: the backstage, revolving stage, naraku (hole under the stage), and more.
