“Sense” is a traditional Japanese folding fan. Thin bamboo or wooden slats are bound and fixed at the pivot as the ribs of a fan, on which beautiful Japanese paper or cloth is mounted. Shiga Prefecture has a long history of producing “senkotsu (fan ribs)”. Particularly, 300-year窶登ld “Takashima senkotsu” boasts as much as 90 % share in Japan. While most of them are shipped to Kyoto for Kyo sense (Kyoto folding fan), some are locally made into “Omi sense”. Recently, in order to promote the brand name, folding fans with characteristic Shiga patterns such as fish in Lake Biwa, traditional Otsu-e paintings and the famous eight beauty spots around Lake Biwa are produced and gaining popularity in and out of the prefecture.
