Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum

Recommended Theme and Activities

One of the largest dinosaur museums in the world is located in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, where Japan’s largest numbers of dinosaur fossils have been found. The museum consists of three zones; “Dinosaur World”, “Earth Sciences” and “History of Life”. After going through the passage called “Dino Street” in the basement, you will see an array of 40 complete dinosaur skeletons exhibited in the huge oval shaped space. One thousand and several hundred dinosaur specimens, the large-sized restored diorama and screen images of the dinosaurs are displayed in a lively way just like an impressive “Life-size Illustrated Guide to Dinosaur”. Other highlights including “Dinosaurs in Japan and Asia“ corner where the dinosaurs in Fukui are reconstructed and exhibited, and the hands-on type exhibition room ‘Dino Lab’ where the complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton stands at the center of the room, are also well worth visiting.
