Lake Biwa is the largest lake in Japan with the area of approximately 670k ㎡ and accounts for one sixth of the total area of Shiga Prefecture. Rich in nature, history and culture, the lake has such renowned ‘eight views’ as the national treasure Hikone Castle on the eastern shore, a peaceful boat cruise in Omi-Hachiman, Enryakuji Temple on Mt. Hiei boasting1,200-year history, a beautiful pine grove at Omatsuzaki sandbank on the western shore, Chikubu Island on the water, the reef of Kaizuoosaki, Mt.Shizugatake famous as an old battlefield on the northern shore, and ‘Seta no Karahashi’ bridge, one of the three best bridges in Japan on the southern shore.
