Katsudon is a popular dish served all over Japan. Breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet is placed on the top of a bowl of rice. Usually, pork is cooked with sliced onion, seasoned with sugar and soy-sauce, and then poured with beaten egg before brought to the top of rice. However, if you order katsudon in Fukui Prefecture, you will have “sauce katsudon”. All you will find on the top of rice are several pieces of fried pork cutlet. Some restaurants pour Worcester-sauce-based sauce over the cutlet, while others dip it in the sauce before placed on rice. It looks quite simple, but tastes pretty intriguing; the crispy cutlet, covered with the sweetish sauce in perfect harmony, matches rice and enhances your appetite.
