Zen T shirts, available at the stands inside Eiheiji Temple and shops at the temple town, are the most popular souvenir among foreign tourists to Fukui Prefecture. Associated with Eiheiji Temple, a center of Zen training, letters written in Japanese style such as “Zen” and “Katsu (exclamation to scold Zen practitioners)” are printed on T shirts. These unique T shirts are gaining popularity. The stands inside Eihei-ji Temple sell “T shirts to raise funds for preservation of the forests of the temple”. These products carry such words as “ryukan godo (train yourself to attain enlightenment)” and “yume (dream)”. “Ryukan godo” is a Zen teaching meaning that you would not be able to attain the truth unless you should strive for it with sweat on your forehead. The letters printed on these grateful T shirts are written with brush by the 79th head priest of Eiheiji Temple, Reverend Fukuyama Taiho.
