In Shigaraki area of Koga City, the hometown of Shigaraki ware, you will be cheerfully welcomed by a number of ceramic tanuki (raccoon dog) in front of potteries and ceramic ware shops. With the tradition of 1300 years, Shigaraki pottery is one of the oldest and most prestigious six potteries in Japan. Today, a variety of ceramic ware such as tableware and interior accessories are produced in this area, adopting modern technologies and sense while respecting tradition. Some of the greatest charms of Shigaraki ware are its characteristic texture created by the clay from a stratum called Ko-Biwako (old Lake Biwa) layer and delicate changes of the surface added in the kiln such as “bidoro glaze” and “koge (burn, dark-brown part created when the lower part of the ware is covered with ash)”. This is why Shigaraki ware is praised as the art of the clay and flame. Contemporary ceramic artists with modern and creative sense in the area contribute to adding diverse individualities to Shigaraki ware.
