The city of Shima, where the G7 Ise-Shima Summit was held, is home to numerous hotels overlooking the beautiful ria coastline, traditional inns where you can taste the sea’s riches, and onsens. Of these many options, the Shima Kanko Hotel on Kashiko Island in Ise-Shima National Park was selected to be the site of the summit.

This hotel offers relaxing spaces for visitors and looks much like it did when founded.

The Shima Kanko Hotel, which overlooks Ago Bay, has long fascinated many artists and writers, and is depicted in a novel by Toyoko Yamasaki. Emperors of Japan have stayed there several times, and as one of the oldest hotels in the Ise-Shima area, it hosted the Quadrilateral Meeting of Trade Ministers, an international convention, in 1987.
Its graceful exterior, which melts into the landscape, and its cozy, luxurious interior made using natural wood, reflect the design concepts of Togo Murano, one of the mid-20th-century’s top architects. Its old-fashioned design and collection of paintings gives it a civilized air. The building is surrounded by about 1.6 acres of garden that change in appearance during the four seasons.
The Shima Kanko Hotel consists of three different buildings: The Classic, The Bay Suites, and The Club. For the G7 Ise-Shima Summit, each of three buildings was used for meals and other purposes. The heads of state had a spectacular time thanks to the service and hospitality offered by all three facilities combined as one hotel.
